Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Side-by-Side

This is the most commonly used double pushchair. It usually seats two children side-by-side. They are usually wider than single pushchairs. This makes them less able to maneuver on the footpaths. It may also be difficult to navigate up and down kerbs when the car seat is in place. The extra width allows them to move more easily through doorways and are more evenly distributed so that it is less burdensome for you to carry them on your back.

They can be used as a twin pram from birth and many models can accommodate a carrycot and 2 car seats. Some can even convert into one-mode with an additional basket (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most excellent examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in Twin Mode, allows you to place the rear seat and carrycot side-by-side. This allows you to create an entirely enclosed twin space and is perfect for babies. The pram pushchair also comes with a number of really cool accessories, such as the newborn cocoons which can be attached to face either way (for a twin-facing pram) or facing inwards (for a standard single). It's not as lightweight as other options but it is really cleverly thought out.

Lightweight

Cybex is known for its nifty pushchairs and the single-to-double is no exception. The clever frame can be expanded to take an additional seat, and you can use it as a twin from birth, thanks to the addition of two infant cocoons (PS59 each) that create enclosed lie-flat spaces for babies. It is also possible to use it as a mono mode with one child due to a large shopping basket that is placed behind the seat. It comes with front and rear suspension which means it can take on bumps and uneven surfaces more easily. The top prams choice among our reviewers.

Tandem

If you are planning to have twins you will need a tandem pushchair. This will allow the children to sit together and look at each one another. These are great for things like going to the zoo since the children can look at all the animals together. They are also ideal for parents who need to watch both their toddler and baby at the same time.

Some tandem pushchairs are very adaptable, as they can be converted back to single mode. This is especially useful if you're planning to have more than two children (or just your eldest does not require a buggy anymore). This will prevent you from having to store a buggy empty, which can be expensive.

The Cybex Venus, for example, can be used either in double or mono mode. The frame can be expanded to accommodate a second seat. This isn't the lightest of pushchairs, however it comes with a large shopping basket that sits behind the front seat in double mode (and behind the seat in mono mode). The seats can be positioned so that they face each other, or one could be placed higher so that it can look at the other and see what they're doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs, like the Joolz Geo 3, are equipped to place one on top of the other or side-by-side. They feature a sleek, compact frame that makes it easier to navigate through doorways and supermarket aisles and some models can be used as a jogging stroller or on rough terrain, thanks to a four-wheel suspension and large rear wheels.

Another benefit of a tandem pushchair is that it will often take two carrycots, or a car seat, and buggy seat. This allows you to build a travel system right from the outset and save money on separate purchases. Be aware that tandems are heavier and longer, and can feel less stable when bumping up the kerbs or going over uneven surfaces. They also need dismantling in order to fit into cars.
