Window Sash Repairs

Sashes for windows must be regularly checked for mold, mildew and other damage. If you catch these issues early you can save money on repairs in the future.

The sash is the interior framing that moves vertically either up or down in windows that are open. This article will show you how to do simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

If the sash remains in place, pull the mortise-and-tenon joints out with a screwdriver or hammer and then remove each wood peg. The sash should move freely now, but it may require some lubrication to make it feel less stiff.

With the sash open, measure enough sash cord/chain to reach from the pulley in the top of the jamb to the sash slot on the bottom. Cut the cord/chain and then secure it as in the previous step. You can use a hammer, nails or screws. However, nails are less likely to cause damage.

It is recommended to keep the weights that came with the original counterbalance unless you've purchased a kit to replace the old counterbalance. They're not expensive and easy to install if you buy them from architectural salvage stores. Depending on the dimensions and shape of your window you may require one or two sashweights in order to keep the sash open.
