How to Replace an programming audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and audi Keys replacement possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi tt key case, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
