Buying a Defra Wood Burning Stove

If you live in a smoke controlled zone, then you need a DEFRA approved wood burning or multi fuel stove. These stoves are endorsed by the government for air pollution, and they prevent the fire from being deficient in oxygen which produces smoke.

While a Defra approved stove may not look any different on the outside, they feature the most recent eco-friendly innovations inside. For example, they feature secondary and secondary air intakes.

DEFRA approved stoves have been subjected to rigorous testing to make sure that they adhere to the regulations of the Department of Environment. They are designed to burn fuels more efficiently and produce less pollutant. To minimize airborne particles, Defra exempted stoves can only be used with well-seasoned, dry fuels as well as smokeless wood. They require regular maintenance, such as a chimney sweep, to avoid accumulation of creosote.
