How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare audi key in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially when they're an Bosch unit like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues in your vehicle.
